Domain Name System (DNS) is a standard technology that manages Web site’s name and other Internet domains. DNS technology enables the user to type names into the Web browser and the computer will then locate and identify that address on the Internet automatically. Any computer that is registered to join Domain Name System will be known as DNS server.
The server uses special-purpose networking software, features a public IP address, and contains a database of network names and addresses for other Internet hosts. Private network protocols are used for the communications between the DNS servers.
All DNS servers are organized in a hierarchy. The top level of the hierarchy which is also known as root servers store the complete database of Internet domain names and their corresponding IP addresses. Most lower level DNS servers are owned by businesses or Internet Service Providers (ISPs).
